Hello: A Unique Pub-Restaurant Design in Bangalore

Revitalizing an Existing Structure with a Cost-Effective and Quick Construction Turnaround

The climatic approach of having a "Veranda" space as seen in Bangalore colonial architecture. Industrial buildings with exposed structural members. Graphic interior elements. Facade screens as climate control devices.

An existing restaurant in Bangalore has been transformed into a unique pub-restaurant design called Hello, thanks to the creative vision of designer Sachid Umesh. This project stands out for its innovative approach to revitalizing an existing structure while ensuring a cost-effective and quick construction turnaround.

The design of Hello draws inspiration from the climatic approach seen in Bangalore's colonial architecture, as well as industrial buildings with exposed structural members. The interior features graphic elements that add visual interest, while facade screens serve as climate control devices.

One of the key strengths of this design is the reconfiguration of the restaurant into a two-story space connected by a double height. The new structure is exposed outside the existing building, creating an exoskeleton effect. The backdrop gabled wall has been retained and restored, adding character to the space.

The upper floor of Hello is designed to be almost entirely open to its surroundings, allowing natural light and greenery to flow in. This creates a refreshing and vibrant atmosphere for patrons. The front facade screen is equipped with louvres that can be adjusted to modulate the porosity of the space, providing both privacy and ventilation.

In terms of functionality, Hello caters to the young working class crowd in the nearby tech parks. The design takes into consideration the duality of the venue as a day and night space. During the day, the light-filled interior offers a relaxed and inviting ambiance, while at night, it transforms into a bustling and high-energy environment. Careful attention has been given to the lighting aspects to enhance the overall experience.

Despite the challenges posed by the project, including the need to retain and revitalize the existing structure and the tight timeline for completion, Sachid Umesh and the design team successfully delivered a remarkable pub-restaurant design that has quickly become a popular destination in Bangalore.

Completed in January 2018, Hello showcases the fusion of art, architecture, and design in the heart of Bangalore, India. Its unique blend of colonial and industrial influences, combined with thoughtful circulation and lighting considerations, make it a standout establishment in the city's vibrant hospitality scene.
